Getting started with Scratch Jr

Getting started with Scratch Jr

The first step on the programming journey is something called Scratch Jr. (we'll meet his big brother Scratch later).  The idea in Scratch Jr. is that you "click together" on the screen the parts of a program which animates a scene and causes the characters on the screen to do things.

For information about Scratch Jr, go to http://www.scratchjr.org/ (you can click on this link).
There you will find a link to download the App for iPad or Android.

Click on the "Learn" tab at the top which explains what you see when you are running the app.

There are videos (click on Videos at the top right) which help you to get started.

Also under the "Teach" tab at the top there are lots of good activities which will help you learn more and more about Scratch Jr.

But hey, you don't need to watch the videos. You can't break anything, so just start the app and try it out if you would rather work that way! The videos are probably useful later when you want to do stuff like add sound, create your own characters or whatever. Some of it is written for teachers but that's OK.

Oh, you probably should know that Scratch Jr. is really aimed at 5-7 year olds, so don't be too surprised if it all seems a bit childish :-) Don't worry, Scratch, his big brother is capable of a lot more, including multi-player games and stuff. However you will find Scratch easier of you know your way around Scratch Jr.
